Overview

The R model is a very unique model in Martin history. Up until 1932, Martin was making mostly flattops. To compete with the likes of Gibson and Epiphones of those days, the arch-top models were the rage amongst big stars in the jazz scene. Martin was trying to break into the market so to speak. But, the line up did not last and this model ceased from 1942. Still, the f-hole archtop from the model is beginning to garner a renewed interest amongst the guitar community.

Here's a guitar for those seeking to either set himself apart from the mundane mix of guitarists. Or the savvy collector who sees these undervalued babies as a potential investment for the coming future. The R-18 model was the top-of-the-line guitar retailing at $55 then! Those were princely sums for a guitar then. Either way, these are really well made instruments with an almost action free problem with it's metal tailpiece. This iconic Martin sunburst finish is different from the cherry burst that Gibson is known for. With it's earthy tone finish and a truly smooth sound, these models should have been a hit with most.

This guitar is a sight to behold with it's original finish but without it's pickguard. Although most would think a f-holed jazz example would mean quick decay and weaker resonance. We have strung this with flat top steel strings Elixir PB 12s to be exact, and it sings!
